What Customers Say About The Backpacker's Field Manual, Revised and Updated: A Comprehensive Guide to Mastering Backcountry Skills:

For beginners it offers a lot of great advice and it is a great little refresher for those of us long on the trail. It is way to heavy to carry with, so study up before you go.Some of the leave no trace stuff is a little over the top.Highly recommended. This is a great book for beginners and experienced hikers/campers alike.

A book to keep forever. Read this book cover to cover before I took my first backpacking trip. Four year later, I still reference it.

The main difference is that this guide is much more gear focused and shows you how to get the most out of your gear while enabling you to enjoy mother nature.I give this book 5 out of 5 and certainly recommend it. Backpacking, Camping and Hiking are wonderful activities that require a great deal of knowledge in order to safely and comfortably enjoy your surroundings. To the beginner, tasks such as gear selection and trip planning can be a scary and confusing experience but armed with the suggestions in this book these decisions are actually quite easy. This book covers many important aspects of outdoor travel including Basic Trip Planning, Gear Selection, First Aid, Safety, Travelling with Children, Wildlife and so much more. This book can be compared to similar "Wilderness Survival" manuals including the Army's FM 21-76.

Anyways you can bet on me carrying this book with me when i go to the smoky mountains next month. This book has very useful information and i guess could be good to seasoned backpackers, I'll let you know in a few years a guess. I am a completly new backpacker. I am planning my first trip to the Smoky Mountains and read this book to help my out with EVERYTHING because i had no clue about what to get.

Rick Curtis, the author, is the director of the Outdoor Action Program at Princeton and he shares his knowledge of teaching outdoor skills in this book. A interesting feature I found upon reading this book is it is full of excellent information for the person who is well established as a backpacker and wants to introduce new people to the sport. He lays out a wonderful base on which to share one's passion for backpacking with others and breaks it down for any learning curve and physical ability. As an added bonus Curtis has included on the book's website numerous documents to assist you in your trip planning and other aspects of backpacking. This book is a must have for anybody who enjoys the outdoors and is invaluable to people in leadership positions who want to share their passion with others. This book has valuable information for the person who is far from a rookie at backpacking, but not quite an AT through-hiker. It is filled with what I can only describe as "Sophomore level" backpacking knowledge and helps get that person who enjoys backpacking to the next level in enjoying the sport.
